Is Solitary Confinement Torture Essay Solitary Confinement is the act of placing a prisoner in a small cell, usually the size of your average bathroom, for up to 23 hours a day with one hour reserved for physical activity. The only contact the prisoner is allowed to have with the outside world is through letters. It sounds horrible, but is it torture? To answer this we have to define and set up criteria for something to be considered â€Å"torture†. I have created such a definition and criteria and have decided that for something to be considered torture it must (a) cause some sort of physical or mental pain or discomfort, and (b) must have some sort of lasting effect upon the victim. Solitary confinement is torture because it causes mental anguish and often leaves prisoners with mental illness and other mental problems that stay with them long after their prison term is over. First we have to see if solitary confinement does in fact cause some sort of physical or mental pain or discomfort. According to a Dr. Stuart Grassian, there is a specific syndrome that is persistent among solitary confinement inmates with very real and very dramatic effects. Hyperresponsivity to external stimuli, meaning the inmate becomes increasingly sensitive to sounds, movements, etc. is one of the symptoms. You get sensitive to noise the plumbing system. Someone in the tier above me pushes the button on the faucet. Its too loud, gets on your nerves. I cant stand it. I start to holler. (qtd. in Grassian 3). Other symptoms include perceptual distortions, illusions and hallucinations, panic attacks, difficulties with thinking, concentration and memory, intrusive obsessional thoughts, overt paranoia, and problems with impulse control. Grassian 3-4) If solitary confinement truly was torture, it would also need to have some sort of lasting effect on the victims. Since solitary confinement does not cause physical harm, there are no long term physical effects. However, solitary confinement causes severe psychological anguish, and results in long term effects. The studying of P. O. W. camp veterans shows that the short term effects of the Delirium-like state regress with time, but long term effects begin to surface and become noticeable. Dr.  Stuart Grassian says about long term effects of solitary confinement that â€Å"These not only include persistent symptoms of post traumatic stress (such as flashbacks, chronic hyper vigilance, and a pervasive sense of hopelessness), but also lasting personality changes especially including a continuing pattern of intolerance of social interaction, leaving the individual socially impoverished and withdrawn, subtly angry and fearful when forced into social interaction. † (13) He found an identical pattern of change in inmates that went through long periods of solitary confinement years ago (Grassian 13). For something to be considered torture it has to meet two criteria. It must (a) cause some sort of physical or mental pain or discomfort, and (b) must have some sort of lasting effect upon the victim. Solitary confinement clearly causes mental pain and discomfort. The psychological effects are so severe that they even cause inmates to physically mutilate themselves without even being aware of their actions or being able to control themselves. I cut my wrists many times in isolation. Now it seems crazy. But every time I did it, I wasnt thinking lost control cut myself without knowing what I was doing. (qtd. in Grassian 4). Solitary confinement meets the first part of the criteria in that it causes mental pain and also indirectly causes physical pain. Solitary confinement also has a lasting effect on the victim. Since solitary confinement meets the criteria for something to be considered torture, it is, in fact, torture. The Unites States constitution protects from cruel and unusual punishment, but solitary confinement is a practice implemented in prisons every day. Since it is torture, and undoubtedly cruel and unusual punishment, it should be stopped. There are more constructive and humane ways to discipline criminals no matter how severe their crime than solitary confinement. If out prison systems have to resort to torturing its prisoners and calling it discipline then there’s a problem. The prison systems in the United States are in serious need or a reform, and outlawing solitary confinement is the first step that needs to be taken.

What is privilege? What does it mean? Is privilege inherited or is it earned? As an American resident of color I’ve learned that privilege in this country is something that is innate and inherited. The privilege that I speak of is that of White privilege. There are two prominent writer/scholars who have taken the issue of white privilege to heart and have shared their expert analysis on the subject; these authors/writer-scholars are Peggy McIntosh, a white feminist, and Beverly Tatum, an African American Psychologist. McIntosh, in her article "Coming to See Correspondences," makes excellent observations about the privilege that she has experienced just by being a white female in America. The two most significant points made by McIntosh in this article are as follows. One, â€Å"A white skin in the United States opens many doors for whites whether or not we approve of the way dominance has been conferred on us†¦the silence and denials surrounding privilege are the key political tools here† (P. 104). The second and even more important point is that â€Å"the obliviousness about white advantage, like obliviousness about male advantage, is kept strongly inculturated in the United States so as to maintain the myth of meritocra cy, the myth that democratic choice is equally available to all†¦props up those in power and serves to keep power in the hands of the same groups that have most of it already† (105). Both points serve McIntosh’s objective of making clear that the notion of white privilege is not a myth. Due to the socially constructed and arbitrary nature of ideologies concerning race (a biological, phenotypic/ (physical) expression of human features) the highly immoral and nonsensical practice [whether recognized or not] of white supr... ... of â€Å"defeatism† in which people of color refuse to adhere to the demands and requirements of popular culture because they believe their efforts and accomplishments will go unrecognized. This psychological ditch works against the advancement of people of color and serves to further perpetuate the institutionalized practice of passive racism by influencing minority groups to remove themselves from the realm of socio-economic mobility, the attainment of education and involvement in political activity. Both authors have recognized the fundamental structures behind privilege –specifically white privilege in America. Their purpose and that of many civil right activists of our era is to bring awareness to those who are in positions of privilege to bring change that fosters the spirit of inclusion, reform and progression into America’s social and mainstream environments.

Miracles Essay

The question are miracles possible is a hard question for me to answer because while I am a believer in God I am also a believer in Scientific reasoning with a scientific and mathmatical mind. To answer this question to the best of my ability I am going to answer it both from a Christian and a scientific standpoint. To answer this question we must first know what is defined as a miracle. The dictionary defines a miracle as â€Å"an effect or extraordinary event in the physical world that surpasses all known human or natural powers and is ascribed to a supernatural cause†. By the dictionaries definition of a miracle anything that happens that we cannot possible have an explanation must be a miracle like the stain that appears on Henry Poole’s wall (Henry Poole Was Here). The appearance of the stain itself is not a miracle because a person putting it there can explain that, but what happened to the people that touched it was a miracle. When people touched the stain they were healed (Henry Poole Was Here). The most widely knows miracles are the biblical miracles performed by God through his son Jesus. Jesus feed the thousands with food that was only meant to feed the few, he turned water into wine, and he made the blind see, we cannot comprehend nor explain these actions therefore they are marked miracles. From a religious stand point I see a miracle as an act of God to benefit this strongest, purest, and most innocent believers as acknowledgement and gratitude of their belief in him. These miracles are a sign that he is here and he appreciates our faith in him. Gods miracles are not only meant for his believers, they are also used to show the lost and the nonbelievers that he is here and he just wants to help us. These miracles are not always good as shown in the plagues that God put upon Egypt to show the pharaoh that God does exist. This was relevant in the movie when the nonbeliever Henry went to the doctor and was told that he was no longer sick (Henry Poole Was Here). God also use a miracle to destroy his creation when he realized the wickedness of man and is grieved by his creation, but as a gracious forgiving God he sought to preserve creation so he chose Noah to build an ark and fill it with the worlds animals and repopulate the world once the flood had subsided. This was a miracle that was meant to wake up the world to see its flaws and learn from them to become a better God-fearing world. From a scientific view there are no miracles, there are only the unlikely mathematically impossible phenomenons that although impossible they happen. Hume gives us a different definition in his book: A miracle is a violation of the laws of nature; and as a firm and unalterable experience has established these laws, the proof against a miracle, from the very nature of the fact, is as entire as any argument from experience can possibly be imagined. (Hume) To Hume if it happens according to the established laws of nature, it is not a miracle, so basically if it happens then it is not a miracle. Scientifically there are no miracles, which means if it happens then there is a scientific reason that will explain it no matter how hare it is for the mind to grasp. From my religious background miracles do prove the existence of God because a miracle is the action of God used to show that he is there and he is watching over us. Gods miracles are also used to show nonbelievers that he is here with his arms open wide to accept all that take him into their heart, they are also used to punish the worst of nonbelievers and that shows others that he exists. Hume said: I beg the limitations here made may be remarked, when I say, that a miracle can never be proved so as to be the foundation of a system of religion. (Hume) From a scientific point of view just because an event happens that we cannot explain does not make it a miracle, and just because we cannot explain the event does not mean that God caused it. If we went back in time and brought a person to the future they would see so many things that they cannot explain, so they may call them all miracles, but we would know how these things work so we would know that they are not miracles. To get to my point just because we cannot explain it now does not mean it is a miracle, we may eventually evolve and discover more information in the future that will give us an explanation to the event. My religious background wins over my scientific mind for now, so I myself do believe in miracles and that they are signs from God that he is watching over us. Miracles are Gods reminders, rewards, and punishments to help guide us on our path of riotousness that will eventually lead us to Heaven if we do not stray.
